EDP Supports New England Kids Triathlon

Team Psycho’s Elite Development Program (EDP) was pleased to be one of the major sponsors of the inaugural New England Kids Triathlon held at MIT in Cambridge, MA on July 22, 2012.  The race gave over 500 children from the Boston area, ages 6-15, a chance to experience the challenge and thrill of completing a triathlon.  There were many first-timers participating but also a few veteran tri-kids who look to be grooming themselves to be our future Olympians.

The event partnered with the New England Patriots and a number of local YMCA’s to drum up interest and exposure through a series of clinics and pep rallies.  The atmosphere inside the MIT natatorium where the swim took place was filled with anticipation as kids lined up to hit the pool one by one.

After completing 2 laps (ages 6-10) or 4 laps (ages 11-15) of the 50-meter pool, the kids headed out to the parking lot for transition to a 3-mile or 6-mile bike, followed by a ½ or 1-mile run which ended at a festive finish line on the MIT outdoor track.

A fun perk for the kids was a Celebrity Big Kids race in which some of the New England Patriots faced off with our own EDP Elite athlete, Ethan Brown, and longtime TP member Karen Smyers among other notables in the local triathlon world.  Ethan bounced back from a few body blocks that the linebackers threw at him to take the win and Karen raced unimpeded to 2nd place.

Ethan and Karen stuck around to congratulate the kids and hand out awards to the top 3 in each age division and gender.

This event proved to be a great addition to the other youth events that the EDP supports: the Lincoln Kids Triathlon: Splash, Mash and Dash and the Thoreau Road Race.  The EDP is committed to fostering  Psycho Karma in the next generation!
